Edmund W. Gordon gives a speech accepting the McGraw Prize in Education on Nov. 13, 2024, at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City.

In November, Edmund W. Gordon, Jody Lewen, and Robert Lerman received the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education in New York.

After accepting their prizes, these education leaders took to the stage to reflect on the inspiration for their work, why they were able to make a difference, and the innovations they hope to see.

Edmund W. Gordon, Pre-K-12

Director Emeritus, Gordon Institute for Advanced Study at Teachers College, Columbia University

“Education for me is about improving the human condition, improving that condition by improving the intellective competence of human beings, and along with that competence, their intellectual character. I’m grateful for my many opportunities to serve. I’m thankful to those who nominated me, and those who selected me.”

Jody Lewen, Higher Education

President, Mount Tamalpais College

“Whether in education, politics, or philanthropy, innovation is not just about new strategies, solutions, or practices. It’s about what we’re willing to question, what taboos we’re willing to violate, and what risks we’re prepared to take for the public good. We urgently need a revolution of both courage and imagination in ourselves, in our institutions, and in our society. My deepest thanks to all of you for lighting the way.”

Robert Lerman, Lifelong Learning

Emeritus Professor of Economics, American University
Fellow, The Urban Institute
Co-Founder, Apprenticeships for America

“I believe that apprenticeships at scale can change the nature of work for many Americans, raising their earnings but also pride in their occupational expertise. With the self-esteem that comes with accomplishment, more Americans would feel good about themselves and the country.”

Three new leaders will take the stage to receive a McGraw Prize in November 2025. Whose speech do you want to hear? Nominate them before March 1, 2025.
