Michael Webber, 2026 Prize Winner
A professor in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering and the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, Michael Webber is distinguished by his ability to translate complex energy and environmental issues for policymakers, industry leaders, journalists, and the public. At a time when decisions about energy influence everything from economic growth and national security to climate resilience and household costs, Webber has become a trusted guide to understanding the systems that power modern life.
His work reaches audiences far beyond academia. His books Power Trip and Thirst for Power were adapted into award-winning television programs viewed in more than 110 countries, while his continuing education courses have reached more than 45,000 learners. He has also developed educational resources for K–12 students, including materials distributed through PBS LearningMedia and Minecraft. By making complex issues understandable and relevant, Webber has helped millions engage with some of the most consequential energy and environmental challenges of our time.
Webber's ability to bridge research, industry, and public understanding is rooted in experience across all three worlds. In addition to his academic career, he co-founded the educational technology company DISCO Learning Media and served as Chief Science and Technology Officer at ENGIE, one of the world's largest energy companies.
